Comfort Colors 1717 printing: what works best.
How each major decoration method performs on the garment-dyed 1717. Note: pigment-dyed fabric needs special consideration for white ink and fine-detail prints.
DTF (Direct-to-Film)
Excellent adhesion on heavyweight ring-spun cotton. Test on pigment-dyed colors; the slightly textured surface can produce a beautiful vintage finish.
DTG (Direct-to-Garment)
Works but requires adjustment. Pretreatment is critical, since pigment dye can interact with white ink and pretreat solution. Test before bulk runs.
Screen Printing
The signature decoration method for Comfort Colors. Use a soft-hand discharge or water-based ink to preserve the garment-dyed feel.
Plastisol Transfers
Heavy cotton holds plastisol well. Lower temp (300-320 degrees F) recommended to avoid scorching on pigment-dyed colors.
Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)
Strong bond on cotton. Some pigment-dyed colors release dye during press; use barrier sheets for darker shades.
Embroidery
Heavyweight cotton supports stitching beautifully for a premium look. Use cut-away or tear-away stabilizer.
Water-Based Printing
Ink absorbs into ring-spun cotton for an integrated, vintage hand feel.
Discharge Printing
100% cotton plus reactive dye makes a perfect candidate. Removes dye and replaces with new color for true soft-hand prints.
Puff Printing
Heavyweight cotton supports thick puff ink without distortion.
Foil Printing
Smooth surface accepts foil with adhesive transfers.
Sublimation
100% cotton blocks dye-sub ink. The 1717 is fully cotton, so use a polyester-specific blank for sublimation.
Laser / Burnout
Not suitable for cotton fabric. Burnout requires polyester blends; use a 50/50 cotton-poly blank instead.

DTF, wash-care & garment-dye issues? Start here.
Garment-dyed cotton has unique characteristics. Here is how to handle common DTF, wash-care, and pigment-dye questions on the 1717.
Improper heat-press application. If the transfer is pressed too lightly, too briefly, or peeled before it has cooled when required, the adhesive may not bond properly to the heavyweight fabric.
Increase time within the 4-12 sec range at 280-320 degrees F and follow your cold or hot peel instructions. Time depends on the DTF transfer and heat press.
High heat is the most common cause. Washing with hot water or using a high dryer setting makes the fabric flex and stresses the cured print layer.
Set clear wash-care expectations: cold wash, inside-out, low tumble dry, or hang dry. Include these instructions with every printed order.
Harsh detergents or bleach can break down color, and under-cured transfers may not fully lock the ink and adhesive into the garment.
Wash inside-out in cold water, tumble dry low, and avoid bleach. A simple printed care card or insert prevents common print complaints.
Residual pigment from the garment-dye process can remain on the fabric surface and transfer during heat pressing.
Use parchment or a protective cover sheet between the transfer and platen, and clean the platen between presses to prevent pigment transfer.
On certain garment-dyed colors, residual pigment can affect how white ink or white underbase appears after pressing.
Test on the actual shirt color before bulk production and adjust white underbase coverage if needed.
The garment-dye process naturally creates slight shade variation from shirt to shirt, which is part of the Comfort Colors vintage look.
Inform customers upfront that slight color variation is normal, and order extra units for projects that need tighter color matching.
The 1717 is heavyweight cotton, garment-dyed, so sublimation is not recommended. Sublimation ink needs polyester to bond properly.
Switch to a polyester-specific blank for sublimation projects.
