Plenty of people claim their DTF transfers are durable. We wanted to actually prove it. In March, we took a Next Level shirt with a DTF Dallas transfer pressed on for just three seconds, ran it through 100 complete wash cycles and 100 tumble dry cycles, and filmed the whole thing.
Since then, we have run the same wash test on five more popular blanks: Bella+Canvas 3001, Bella+Canvas 3001CVC, Comfort Colors 1717, Gildan 5000 and Gildan 64000. All six tested prints finished with no visible cracking, peeling or fading.
DTF Dallas rates its transfers for 100+ wash cycles when applied and cared for correctly. All six tested prints remained intact after 100 washes and 100 tumble dry cycles.
Here is what we tested, how the transfers held up, and which application settings to use with your own heat press.

The Setup: What We Tested
The original test shirt was a Next Level 3600 blank. The DTF transfer was pressed onto it for three seconds before the shirt went through 100 complete wash cycles and 100 tumble dry cycles. After every wash, we checked the print.
Every material used in the original test, including the DTF film, ink, adhesive powder and finished transfer, was provided by DTF Printer USA. We conducted the original test in partnership with DTF Printer USA and Next Level.
The transfers used in our wash tests used the same film, ink, adhesive powder, and production process we use for DTF Dallas customer orders.
October 2026 Update: Five More Blanks
After publishing the Next Level results, we tested five additional shirts. Each received a transfer applied on the high-pressure hydraulic heat press we use in production for about four seconds, followed by 100 complete wash cycles and 100 tumble dry cycles.
| Blank | Press setting used | Wash / dry cycles | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Next Level 3600 | Three seconds in the original test | 100 / 100 | No visible cracking, peeling or fading |
| Bella+Canvas 3001 | High-pressure hydraulic press, about four seconds | 100 / 100 | No visible cracking, peeling or fading |
| Bella+Canvas 3001CVC | High-pressure hydraulic press, about four seconds | 100 / 100 | No visible cracking, peeling or fading |
| Comfort Colors 1717 | High-pressure hydraulic press, about four seconds | 100 / 100 | No visible cracking, peeling or fading |
| Gildan 5000 | High-pressure hydraulic press, about four seconds | 100 / 100 | No visible cracking, peeling or fading |
| Gildan 64000 | High-pressure hydraulic press, about four seconds | 100 / 100 | No visible cracking, peeling or fading |
The Results After 100 Washes
On all six shirts, the transfers remained clean, bright and vibrant. No visible cracking. No peeling. No fading. The prints also remained soft to the touch.
In the original test, the Next Level shirt itself shrank about two inches over the 100 cycles. The shirt’s colour stayed the same, and the transfer remained intact despite the change in the garment’s dimensions. This shrinkage observation applies to the original Next Level shirt; results can vary between blanks.
Application time depends on your equipment. The three- and four-second application times reflect the equipment used in these tests. They should not be treated as the recommended settings for a manual heat press.

What This Means for Your Customers
If your customer wears a shirt once a week and washes it after every wear, 100 wash cycles represent roughly two years of weekly washing. Every transfer we tested was still vibrant and fully intact after 100 washes and 100 tumble dry cycles.
That gives apparel sellers a concrete durability benchmark across six popular blanks. It also supports DTF Dallas’s rating of 100+ wash cycles when transfers are applied and cared for correctly. Actual garment life depends on the blank, application quality, washing conditions and drying habits.
The soft hand feel of the prints after repeated washing matters too. In these tests, the transfers remained flexible and comfortable rather than becoming stiff or visibly cracked.
Material quality is another part of the process. Learn more about how DTF inks and powders affect transfer performance.
How to Get the Best Results from Your DTF Transfers
Use the application settings recommended for your equipment. DTF Dallas’s published manual heat press instructions differ from the shorter application time used on our production press.
Manual Heat Press
- Temperature: 290–310°F
- Pressure: Medium
- Press time: 8–15 seconds
- Peel: Hot peel
Hydraulic Heat Press
On a high-pressure hydraulic heat press like the one DTF Dallas uses in production, the same transfers bond in about four seconds.
That was the setting used for the five additional tests. The original Next Level test used a three-second press.
The difference in application time comes from the equipment and pressure used. For a manual heat press, follow the published 8–15-second instructions rather than copying the shorter production press time. Test one garment before pressing a full batch.
Care Tips for Lasting Prints
- Wait at least 24 hours after pressing before the first wash.
- Turn garments inside out before washing.
- Use cold water, a gentle cycle and mild detergent.
- Avoid bleach and fabric softener.
- Tumble dry on low heat or air dry when possible.
Correct application and consistent care help preserve adhesion, color and print flexibility. Read the DTF Dallas application and care instructions for more guidance.
Gang Sheets: Same Quality, Better Value Per Print
Every transfer in these tests was produced with the same materials and process used for DTF Dallas orders. Whether you order a single transfer or a full gang sheet, you receive the same film, inks and adhesive powder.
For custom apparel production, gang sheets let you combine multiple designs on one sheet. Using the available space efficiently can help reduce your cost per print.

Frequently Asked Questions About DTF Transfer Durability
How many washes do DTF Dallas transfers last?
DTF Dallas rates its transfers for 100+ wash cycles when applied and cared for correctly. The six-blank test documented in this article reached 100 complete washes and 100 tumble dry cycles with no visible cracking, peeling or fading. Actual lifespan varies with application, garment type and care.
Can I use a four-second press on a manual heat press?
Four seconds is not DTF Dallas’s recommended manual heat press setting. For a manual press, use 290–310°F, medium pressure, 8–15 seconds and hot peel. The four-second setting in the additional wash tests used a high-pressure hydraulic heat press.
Can DTF-printed shirts be tumble dried?
Yes, shirts printed with DTF Dallas transfers can be tumble dried on low heat. Air drying is gentler on the print. Avoid high dryer heat even though the tested shirts completed 100 tumble dry cycles.
Which shirt blanks were included in the 100-wash test?
The DTF Dallas 100-wash test included Next Level 3600, Bella+Canvas 3001, Bella+Canvas 3001CVC, Comfort Colors 1717, Gildan 5000 and Gildan 64000. The original wash-test video documents the Next Level shirt; it does not show all six tests.
How long should I wait before washing a DTF-printed shirt?
Wait at least 24 hours after applying a DTF Dallas transfer before the first wash. Then wash the shirt inside out in cold water with mild detergent. Follow the DTF Dallas application and care instructions for additional guidance.
